The Seamoor Unit is a purpose built chemotherapy unit. We were responsible for the design which was entirely financed by charitable fundraising.

Raising 100% of the funds for the capital cost of a scheme was a new venture for the NHS Trust concerned, which started as a charitable arm with professional fundraisers. It's successful campaign was supported enthusiastically by the local community's fundraising efforts.

NHS staff and a Project Board developed the briefing with representatives of clinicians, fundraisers and users.

The challenge in the design of the building was to create a protective and private building in a restricted site next to a large existing hospital block. The design solution was to wrap the building around a sheltered courtyard and to enclose the site with a sinuous perimeter wall. Consulting rooms look out onto a private garden that patients can spend their time in before and after their sometimes lengthy treatment. By stepping the roof section, the design lets sunlight into the corridors and daylight into the treatment room.

The scheme was opened in March 2015, after a series of open days for the community who raised the funds for it.
