The building is a Listed Grade 11 stone-built town centre church dating from 1896. There had been an adaptation scheme to the inside of the premises in 1998 but little work to the outside of the building. There were falls of pointing and stonework from the façade onto the public footpath, and also signs of a settlement crack to the SE corner of the building.

DWP were commissioned to undertake a detailed survey of the condition of the exterior of the building and produce a planned maintenance schedule with approximate costs. Subsequently the  practice prepared a detailed scheme for the repair works including stone replacement, repointing and the construction of a supporting buttress for Listed Building consent and Planning approval.
